Each year on this day, September 21, the international Day of Peace is recognised around the world. Through observing 24 hours of non violence and cease fire, the UN General Assembly has decorated this as a day of strengthening the ideals of peace.
This year is particularly significant: It is the 20th Anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. The theme to commemorate is; Shaping Peace Together.
Why does this concept have to stop tomorrow? Have we learned nothing?
Instead of using this one day to enjoy 24 hours of peace, why don’t we make it the first day of our united journey TOWARDS peace? Why not let this day mark the beginning of a curve in our history, of the time we ignited REAL change.
As 2020 unfolds, proving to be a year we’ll never forget, the one thing Covid-19 has shown us is that phenomenally rapid change is possible, when humanity is united in common cause.
Perhaps then, we can come together and find a solution for the 70.8 million refugees that have forcibly been removed from their homes due to conflict?
6.2 million people in Syria alone are displaced due to the Syrian civil war. 2.9 million people are in need of humanitarian aid due to the current violence in the Central African Republic. Bangladesh is home to the biggest refugee camp in the world, where almost 1 million Rohingya people have been left destitute after the Myanmar massacre in 2016.
We’ve already proven we’re more than capable to create solutions to pressing challenges.
We’ve proven that distance, race, religion and politics, all the things that stand to divide us, cannot. That we are ONE race. The human race. We have one home, Mother Earth. And together, collectively, as a whole, we can invoke the changes we so desperately need to get to where we know we need to be.
We know on some deep level within us we have the love needed to heal ourselves, to heal our planet and rise each other up.
We know we have what’s required, to shed the layers of suffering, slaughter and destruction that seems to have dominated our actions for too long.
We’ve seen the difference that kindness, compassion, understanding and love can have if we open ourselves up to it. When we do, it multiplies, expands, it’s reach touching others far beyond our imagination, until it’s magnified back to us like a glorious loop of beautiful magic.
It begins within you, blissful peace rises and expands out, touching everyone and everything. So, begin there. Begin with inner peace.
